Gum Disease Treatment
Diagnosis, charting, and deep cleaning below the gum line. For many patients this alone halts the disease without any surgery at all.
Read morePeriodontal disease is an infection of the gums and the bone that holds your teeth in place. Caught early it is fully reversible. Left alone it becomes the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it does its damage quietly, because it rarely hurts until it is advanced.
At MD Periodontics, both of your doctors are board-certified periodontists. That means three additional years of surgical training focused entirely on gums and bone, beyond dental school. If your gums keep bleeding, or your dentist has mentioned deep pockets or bone loss, this is the specialty that handles it.
Gum disease moves through predictable stages. Knowing which one you are in tells you how urgent treatment is and how much can still be reversed.
Gums look red or puffy and bleed when you brush. Nothing has been lost yet, because the infection sits in the soft tissue only. This stage is fully reversible with professional cleaning and better home care, which is exactly why catching it matters so much.
About gum diseaseThe infection has moved below the gum line and the first bone has been lost. Pockets form between tooth and gum where a brush cannot reach. Bone does not grow back on its own, so from this point forward the goal shifts from reversing to stopping.
Laser gum treatmentPockets deepen, gums recede, and teeth may loosen or shift. Some patients notice bad breath that will not clear. Treatment at this stage usually combines deep cleaning with laser or surgical therapy, and in some cases we can regenerate bone in the deepest sites.
Pocket reduction surgeryOnce periodontitis has been treated it is controlled, not cured. Regular maintenance visits, usually every three months rather than every six, are what keep it stable. This is the part patients skip, and it is the part that decides whether the treatment holds.
Periodontal maintenanceTreatment is matched to your stage, your bone level, and your overall health. Below are the procedures we perform most often.

Read moreBleeding gums are an open wound that never closes. Bacteria and inflammatory chemicals pass from that wound into your bloodstream every time you chew, and researchers have linked chronic gum inflammation to heart disease, diabetes, and complications in pregnancy.
The relationship runs both ways. Diabetes makes gum disease harder to control, and gum disease makes blood sugar harder to manage.
This is why we ask about your full medical history rather than only your teeth. Your medications, your hormones, and your other conditions all change how we plan treatment.
Dr. Daneshmand leads our work on women's periodontal health, where the link between hormones and gum tissue is clearest.
General dentists do excellent work, and many treat early gum disease well. A periodontist is what you want once the disease has reached bone, because that is where the training difference shows.
Gingivitis can be fully reversed. Once it becomes periodontitis and bone has been lost, it cannot be cured, but it can be stopped and kept stable for the rest of your life with treatment and regular maintenance.
No. Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is the earliest reliable sign of infection, and it is also the easiest stage to treat, so it is worth acting on rather than waiting to see if it settles.
Treatment is done under local anesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Afterward most patients describe tenderness for a few days. Laser treatment in particular tends to be far more comfortable than people expect.
Not if we catch it in time. Most patients who begin treatment keep their teeth. Even loose teeth can often be stabilized once the infection is controlled and the bite is adjusted.
Bacteria repopulate a treated pocket in roughly twelve weeks. Six month intervals give the infection time to reestablish, which is why maintenance after periodontal treatment runs on a shorter cycle than a routine cleaning.
Most plans cover a portion, since gum treatment is considered medically necessary rather than cosmetic. We give you a written breakdown before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
Gum tissue does not regrow on its own. However, grafting can restore it and cover the exposed root. Bone loss is different, and only some sites can be regenerated, which is why timing matters.
For many patients yes, because there is no cutting and no stitching, so healing is faster. That said, deeper or more advanced cases still do better with surgical treatment. We tell you honestly which one your situation calls for.
No. Many patients come from their general dentist, but you are welcome to contact us directly if your gums bleed, have receded, or a tooth feels loose.
We treat the gum disease first, then rebuild. Placing an implant into infected or unstable bone is how implants fail, so the order matters. You can read more on our dental implants page.
